Living Recovery in an Addictive World
I just
returned from a long weekend trip to Orlando, Florida where my wife and I
spent two full days at Universal Studios. I'd booked the trip in December
as part of a holiday gift for my wife--who'd wanted to visit the new
Harry Potter exhibits and rides there. Besides, I'd gotten a good deal on
a hotel nearby the park (not such a great deal on airfare) and I figured
my "inner child" could use a break from work and the weather.
Boy, was I in for a rough ride!
It's not that I didn't have moments of awe and fun but between the 90
degree heat, the crowds and long lines, and the overpriced fast food and
consumerist prodding at every turn, I found myself feeling very
overwhelmed, even assaulted, and lost connection to the experience I
had hoped for. I began feeling like I was being taken advantage of
($11.50 on a Butter Beer in a souvenir Harry Potter mug and it wasn't
even real beer!) and instead of letting my guard down and playing, my
guard kept going up. By the end of a long weekend, I was exhausted, had
caught a cold (maybe the germs in the airplane or amusement park) and had
to deal with Spirit Airlines and their extra fees for carry-on luggage.
Ever feel like you need a vacation after your vacation? And on Monday I
got a flat tire!
I've been to Orlando before and I'd forgotten that it kind of reminds me
of Las Vegas--all glitter and glam on the outside but a veritable haven
for addictive impulses--really just an amped up version of the "real
world" I sometimes feel. The stimuli can be mind-boggling. Addicts
be forewarned: there's booze, fattening food, sex (or at least the lure
of it), gambling (or arcade games), shopping, spending and more spending,
and so much more!
I don't mean to be a killjoy but how do we live recovery in an addictive
world?
When I've traveled to Vegas four times in the last two years--for
business and pleasure--I have to approach it like I'm going into a war
zone of sorts. It's only slightly ironic that so many addiction/recovery
conferences take place in Sin City. I'm not a gambler so avoiding
gambling isn't so hard for me. I'm not a spendthrift so overspending
isn't too hard either. I'm not much of a drinker or binge eater either.
In my recovery from shoplifting and stealing, I've been fortunate to be
on guard for any potential relapses in those arenas. I'm faithful to my
wife and, yet, when I'm alone on vacation in such an environment, I can
see how tempting it could be to stray. So, when I'm not working or at a
conference there, I spend most of my time either at the hotel spa,
walking outside to get some exercise and people and building watch, and
then I usually retire early to my room with some carry-out
dinner and the remote control.
It's said that if you're not planning for recovery you're planning for
relapse. Research has shown that more and more people suffer from
"cross-addictions" or "poly-addictions" which is when
more than one addiction exists simultaneously or consequtively. Note the
short list of addictions below. Which apply to you? Perhaps rank them in
order of strength, recurrence or difficulty managing:
What's your "drug(s)" of choice?
ALCOHOL
FOOD
GAMBLING EXERCISE
TANNING
MARIJUANA CAFFEINE
SHOPPING
WORK
PLASTIC SURGERY
COCAINE NICTOTINE
SHOPLIFTING CODEPENDENCY
TEXTING
HEROIN
SUGAR
RELIGION
TV/INTERNET
DAY TRADING
PILLS
SEX
HOARDING VIDEOGAMES
LYING
Beginning Wednesdays May 4th on Canada's Vision TV, a series called
"The Science of Sin" will examine the relationship between the
"seven deadly sins" and addiction in the modern world. All show
times are 10pm EST.
The tentative schedule is as
follows:
May 4:
Greed/Envy (covers overshopping/overspending--keeping up with the
Joneses)
May 11: Gluttony/Sloth (covers overeating and laziness/TV/other passive
addictions)
May 18: Lust/Wrath (covers sexual addictions and the increasing tread
toward verbal and physical violence)
May 25: Pride/Deception (covers the chasing of fame and the building of
false images behind secret lives)
In this addictive world, we either
will choose CONTROL/FEAR or SURRENDER/TRUST.
And we may need all the help we can get to truly change our operating
system. As Einstein once noted: "No problem can be solved from the
same level of consciousness that created it"
Lindsay
Lohan Watch!
Lindsay
Lohan appears to be heading the way of Winona Ryder--to trial!--for
felony theft. After failing to reach a plea deal on March 23rd that would
have required her to spend substantial time in jail (at least a couple of
months), Ms. Lohan will be due back in court on April 22nd for a
preliminary exam. Stay tuned!

Charlie Sheen Watch!
The Charlie Sheen Circus is Coming
to Town by BJ
Hammerstein, Detroit Free Press Reporter
With
the enigmatic and zigzagging former "Two and a Half Men" star
opening his cross-country tour at the Fox Theatre on Saturday night, it
will soon be revealed whether he's been concocting a stage-show hit or
will deliver a devastating bomb.
And,
in perfectly scripted Sheen style, virtually all of the behind-the-scenes
preparations have been kept under wraps.
His
spokesman speaks in short, one-line responses, never revealing his hand.
The tour publicist deflects back to the spokesman. Detroit-connected
concert insiders won't talk about it. National entertainment publications
are in the same predicament: waiting.
E!
chief news correspondent Ken Baker said Sheen's monthlong, 22-city tour
is unprecedented.
"In
terms of live entertainment stories, if this turns out to be a compelling
and entertaining production, it will be considered one of the most
brilliant moves ever," Baker told the Free Press. "If it
doesn't work, it could go down in the record books as one of Hollywood's
biggest disasters. Its unpredictability really makes it exciting."
Will Fox Theatre show spell end of Charlie
Sheen's 2 1/2 minutes?
Charlie
Sheen, the reigning king of controversy, is one day away from holding
court at Detroit's Fox Theatre.
The
embattled 45-year-old, whose rap sheet runs almost as long as his
Hollywood credits, has been pop culture's biggest phenomenon for months
after a string of off-the-cuff media appearances blitzed the public.
Since he announced he's mobilizing a tour, however, Sheen has shut down
the free-flowing info, leaving fans, ticket-holders and the news media
puzzled about just what he's up to. It's made the Detroit show -- the
first of the tour -- an even bigger source of speculation. News media
from all over the country are expected to be in attendance.
What
does the top-dollar sitcom actor, now known for insulting his bosses and
splashing phrases of "winning" across T-shirts, have locked and
loaded?
Only
a few details are available about the cross-country jaunt he's calling
the "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option" tour.
Doors open at 7 p.m. The show will reportedly be 75 minutes. Two area radio
stations were enlisted to help Sheen secure local talent -- a Detroiter
will kick things off with "The Star-Spangled Banner," and a
woman, also from Detroit, will join him as the night's featured intern.
There's a musical director, according to UsMagazine.com . There will be
some sort of multimedia element, according to E!. And Sheen's infamous
two live-in "goddesses" could appear, TMZ.com reported.
ABC's
Andrea Canning, who interviewed Sheen for a March edition of
"20/20," told the Free Press that one reason Sheen's Detroit
date is fascinating because the actor keeps you guessing.
"It
couldn't have been more raw and real or surprising," Canning said of
Sheen's media run that resulted in his termination from TV's
top-rated comedy, "Two and a Half Men," and the departure of
his longtime publicist, Stan Rosenfield. "What neither of us
expected ... was the chord he struck with so many people across the
country."
The
ABC News special scored 9.3 million viewers, about twice the amount of
the network's audience who tuned in to that time slot -- usually reserved
for "Detroit 1-8-7."
To
capitalize on the buzz following "20/20," Sheen launched his
Twitter account and netted a record 1 million followers in 24 hours. He
surprised just about everybody on March 10, when he revealed that he was
taking a show on the road.
"After
our interview, people realized how sort of wacky and funny and smart he
really is," Canning said. "There was no stopping the train.
What's incredible is how he recognized what was happening and parlayed it
into all these other opportunities."
Terry
Shulman, an addiction specialist based out of Franklin, said there's no
denying Sheen has been intriguing to watch. But every story, eventually,
has an end.
"It's
really wild to see how articulate he is and then how off-the-wall he
could be," Shulman said. "Though people will always have an
appetite for escapist fodder, he'll likely be upstaged by world events or
go the way of Glenn Beck and others like him. People will lose interest
after a while."
Dr.
Laura Berman, a sexual health expert and host of OWN: The Oprah Winfrey
Network's "In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman," said she
understands why the general public has been enthralled by Sheen's
audaciousness. But, although she has not treated Sheen herself, she said
he needs therapy -- immediately -- or he could find himself trying to
live through another devastating, downward spiral.
"The
clinician in me is really freaked out," she said. "I'm worried
what's going to happen if some intervention doesn't happen very soon."
WKQI-FM
(95.5) "Mojo in the Morning" co-host Shannon Murphy said gossip
lovers can't look away from big-name celebrity train wrecks. And although
some are hoping for a complete breakdown on Saturday, Murphy added that
this is show business. And Sheen's shocking shenanigans might not be an
epic, career-ending collapse after all.
"I
think he's very smart for capitalizing on his craziness," Murphy
said. "He knows he can make money from all of this.
"Part
of the fascination with the Detroit show is that we don't know what he's
going to do on stage."

Books of The
Month:
Question
Your Thinking, Change The World, by Byron Katie (Hay
House, 2010). This little gem of a book based on Byron Katie's "The
Work" of inquiry is chock-full of mind-expanding quotes on living in
the moment and without our stories--no past, no future. Organized into
various chapters such as on health, money, relationships/sex, and
spirituality, this book is fun to just open up to a page and see what
invitation you find to challenge your everyday beliefs. Here's a few
sample excerpts: "It's not your job to love me--it's mine." "My
love is my business; it has nothing to do with you. You love me and that
isn't personal. You tell the story of I am this or I am that and you fall
in love with your story. What do I have to do with it? I am here for your
perception, as if I had a choice. I am your story, no more and no less.
You have never met me. Nobody has ever met anyone." "You are
the mother you've been waiting for. When you focus on your mother, you
become motherless." "Here's how a child listens: you tell him
something and he puts his own interpretation on what you said. That's
what he hears. Nobody has ever heard you."
The Spirituality of
Imperfection: Storytelling and The Search for Meaning, by
Ernest Kurtz and Katherine Ketcham (1993). This oldie but goodie is full
of historical references and anecdotes about man's endless quest for
perfection and the fruitlessness of this. Contrasting religion and
spirituality, this book lauds the imperfect and how we find our souls in
the mess of our lives. A great book for anyone in recovey, the authors
bring humor and persuasiveness to the importance of shifting our
obsession with the unattainable.
