Shoplifting

There really is no such thing as “something for nothing.” The costs — financial and emotional — are enormous and, ultimately, never worth it. Are you tired of living a secret life? Shoplifting “steals” your self-esteem. Smile! You’re on closed circuit camera! Take the next step to starting a truly authentic and fulfilling life. Welcome to Kleptomaniacs Anonymous. Terrence Shulman has been helping recovering shoplifters since 1992. The Shulman Center can help you beat your shoplifting addiction and give you the tools you need to rebuild your life.

... You are not alone here
Over 10% of Americans shoplift and most can be helped to stop!
Our purpose is to provide safe, confidential and non-judgmental places for compassion, understanding and recovery from "addictive-compulsive" dishonest behavior, primarily shoplifting, fraud, kleptomania and embezzlement.
  • Cleptomaniacs And Shoplifters Anonymous (CASA) is a unique, independent and secular weekly self-help group. It was founded in Detroit, MI in September 1992 by a recovering shoplifter who felt such a group could help himself, others, and the community as a whole.
  • The Shulman Center Program has been continually evolving and fine-tuning from its earliest successful results. Expert Therapy/Counseling sessions are available by phone with Terrence D. Shulman JD, LMSW, ACSW, CAAC, CPC — attorney, addictions counselor, international expert on shoplifting addiction, founder of C.A.S.A., and recovering shoplifter. Typically, 90% of our clients enroll in and successfully complete the basic program.
Our goal is to educate individuals and the community at large about the complex motivations and recovery treatment process for these behaviors, while emphasizing personal responsibility and accountability.

Why do people shoplift?

  • Grief and loss (to fill a void)
  • Anger/Feeling Life is Unfair (to get back/make life right)
  • Depression (to get a lift)
  • Anxiety/Stress (to comfort or soothe)
  • Acceptance/Competition (to fit in)
  • Power/Control (to feel empowered or in control)
  • Boredom/Excitement (to live on the edge)
  • Shame/Low Self-esteem (to distract from feelings of worthlessness)
  • Entitlement/Reward (to compensate for over-giving or sacrifice)
  • Rebellion/Initiation (to break into one’s own identity)

Consequences of shoplifting:

  • Loss of time
  • Loss of respect
  • Loss of relationships
  • Loss of health
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Loss of focus
  • Loss of reputation
  • Loss of property
  • Criminal record
  • Loss of finances
  • Loss of employment
  • Loss of citizenship/residency
